The HWPA is delighted to reveal the shortlists for the 2024 Derby Awards, generously sponsored
by Hong Kong Jockey Club, Coral and WorldPool.

The shortlist for the Racing Writer of the Year features two previous winners, Lee Mottershead,
bidding for a fourth victory, and Peter Thomas, who lifted the trophy in 2022. The pair are joined by
a third Racing Post writer, Patrick Mullins, who is nominated for the first time, and the freelance
Donn McClean.

All four of those on the shortlist for Photographer of the Year are former winners, with the Racing
Post’s pair of Edward Whitaker (seeking a tenth victory) and Patrick McCann (winner in 2021 and
2023), joined by 2005 victor Bill Selwyn and Alan Crowhurst, who would be landing the prize for a
third time.

Patrick McCann and Alan Crowhurst also make the shortlist for Picture of the Year, where the
nominees are completed by another former Photographer of the Year, David Davies, and Debbie
Burt.

The shortlist for Broadcaster of the Year features three former winners, Nick Luck, Lydia Hislop
and Jason Weaver. The trio are joined in the final five by a pair receiving their second nomination,
Adele Mulrennan and Ruby Walsh.

As well as having nine wins as Broadcaster of the Year to his name, Nick Luck is bidding for a third
successive victory in the Reporter of the Year category. He is joined on the shortlist by Jack Keene
of The Sun, a former Racing Writer of the Year in the Guardian’s Greg Wood, as well as the Racing
Post’s Jonathan Harding, who, if successful, would be winning a third Derby Award in a third
different category.

The Emerging Talent Award, appropriately, features a shortlist of four all receiving their first
nomination – Amy Corrado of the Irish Field, Conor Fennelly of the Racing Post, Racing TV’s Joshua Stacey and Xander Brett, a freelance who works mainly for EBN.

Finally, the shortlist for Specialist Writer of the Year features a trio who would be winning their first
Derby Award, Tom Peacock and Alan Sweetman of the Racing Post and Thoroughbred Daily
News’s Emma Berry. They are joined in the final four by Lee Mottershead.

The winners will be announced at the 58th Year of the Derby Awards Lunch at the Lancaster Hotel
in London on 2nd December. A limited number of tickets, at £150 per head, are still available.
