The HWPA will launch its first Racing Media Week to celebrate and showcase the work of our members in the build up to the 56th Derby Awards on December 5th.

Starting on Monday 28th November, a series of interviews will be posted on our website with the sport’s leading journalists, photographers and broadcast to provide insight into their jobs, a reflection on their careers and advice for those considering a career within the industry.

The project, run by committee members James Stevens and Harry Allwood, was inspired by a committee meeting whereby opportunities to learn how to break into the sport appeared sparse. It is hoped the content provided can act as a go-to guide all-year round.

Last year’s racing writer and reporter of the year Lee Mottershead and Chris Cook, from the Racing Post, will detail their expertise on racing journalism in a video interview. Photographer of the year and Post colleague Patrick McCann is next up before the Jockey Club’s social media manager Michael Andrews provides a social media masterclass on Wednesday.

Thursday will feature an interview with a leading broadcaster before ITV Racing commentator Richard Hoiles discusses the art of race-calling to close the video episodes to finish the week. The final piece of content will summarise the week with our ten top tips and potential opportunities on how to break into the industry.
